Good year for golf in Mallorca

At a time when the World Travel Market is promoting sports tourism as the 'next big thing' in travel, it seems that golf in Mallorca is undergoing a bit of a resurgence in popularity. Majorca's 21 courses attracted 134,668 golfers last year and is in Spain's top five for golf destinations.

Golfers tend to come to Mallorca out of peak season, when the weather is more favourable for golf, and better hotel deals are available. September to April are the peak times for the sport in Majorca, and whilst the early season of 2010 was impacted by the ash cloud, October has seen a strong demand, helped by fewer rainy days than the average. Alcanada and Son Gual golf courses top the list for popularity, particularly with German visitors. The green fees in peak season range from €75-150.

Local golfing associations are calling on the government to better promote Mallorca as a golfing destination. They say that the island is missing out on year-round tourism as a result of golfers, because of the limited air schedule during the winter months.
