Hikers warned to take care in Mallorca's mountains

Autumn sees more hillwalkers & accidents occuring in Tramuntana mountains

Walking in Mallorca is very popular, particularly in the Tramuntana mountain range thanks to the stunning views and well marked paths. But it seems that this year, there have been more accidents than usual that require the services of Mallorca's mountain rescue.

So far a total of 70 mountain rescues have taken place on the mountains in this Autumn season. As of mid-september the number of calls to the emergency services has increased, which officials are saying is unusual as normally the number of calls would decrease after the peak summer season.

The mountain rescue and firefighters of Majorca are therefore reminding locals and tourists alike to take care on the mountains in an effort to cut down on the number of calls they are currently receiving - it's three to four calls a week at the moment.

The most recent call to the mountain rescuers on the emergency number 112 was that of a Spanish woman hiking in the Fornalutx area of the Tramuntana mountains near the town of Soller. She had a boulder fall on her shoulder that left her unable to walk down the mountain and required the assistance of a helicopter to take her to the nearby hospital in Espases.

If you do plan to enjoy Mallorca's marvellous scenery on foot, remember to tell someone where you are going, or ideally, go on an organised hike or with a group. Take a map and enough water and snacks to see you through. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains, so keep your eyes open and ensure you have suitable clothing.
