With summertime officially beginning today, the Spanish national weather centre (AEMET) has predicted a hotter than average summer across Spain and, in particular, in the Balearic Islands.

The islands have experienced a hot and drier than average spring. Temperatures in Spain were the hottest on record since 1951 with readings in the Balearics around two degrees centigrade above average.

Forecasts are predicting the first heat wave of the season will hit Mallorca this weekend, with temperatures rising from Thursday.
