Formentor Lighthouse to be model for lighthouses across Mallorca & Mainland Spain

An ambitious new project to sell lighthouses across Spain to private businesses has been proposed this week.

The plan was announced yesterday in Palma by the Minister for Development Ana Pastor and has been imaginatively named “Lighthouses of Spain”. The idea is to sell off many of Spain’s 387 lighthouses for development as hotels and other public amenities.

Formentor Lighthouse in Mallorca is already used for cultural events and tours and the plan is to follow this model and expand on it. Lighthouses like the one in Port Soller command exceptional views and the potential for these properties is huge. The hope is that the private sector will preserve the buildings along with their heritage and cultural significance and that the sale will generate income for the government.
