Lorenzo wins MotoGP 2010 world championship

Mallorcan native Jorge Lorenzo has won the Moto GP world championship after finishing third in the Malaysian MotoGP race, meaning that he cannot be mathematically overtaken with three more races to go in the season. The 23 year old, born in Palma de Mallorca, becomes the second Spaniard to win the championship (the first was Alex Criville in 1999).

Lorenzo started riding bikes at the age of three and started competing in the minicross before moving up into the 125cc championship. He became the youngest winner of a 125cc European race when he was 14 years old and has since competed through the ranks until joining the Fiat Yamaha team in 2008 to race in the MotoGP.

Lorenzo has become a popular figure on the racetrack, and is known for his boisterous post-race celebrations. He has been nicknamed 'X Fuera', as a nod to his flashy overtaking style (to the 'outside' of his opponents).

Congratulations to Lorenzo - Majorca is lucky and proud to add another world champion to it's tally.
