Mallorca is Spain's most popular holiday destination

Hotel occupancy levels in Majorca put the island on top

The hotels in Mallorca have enjoyed unexpected levels of popularity throughout June. Majorca is currently leading the field in Spanish tourist destinations with the highest levels of hotel occupancy. The numbers for June are 20% higher than in May and are beating competitors in the Canary Isles, Andalusia, Costa Dorada and Catalonia.

These numbers look set to stay high as the last minute holiday bookings are made for this summer. “This has been the latest booking year I’ve ever known" said Hugh Morgan Managing Director of Monarch Travel Group. "People are literally booking in the morning to fly out that very afternoon. But, over the past two weeks there has been quite a lot of very late activity on the high streets and 70 percent of holidays sold over the past few weeks will be taken over the coming five to six."

Mallorca continues to be a popular destination for Europeans seeking summer sun as the island is easy to get to and has a great range of hotels, bars, beach clubs and restaurants as well as parks and activities for children.

Despite the numbers being up, profits are not rising as much as hoped as many tourists are choosing to keep expenditure to a minimum - shopping in supermarkets rather than eating in restaurants and generally spending less than in previous years. It's been a difficult year for tourism in Spain with not only the recession but also threats of strikes and changes in VAT.

With strong occupancy numbers for the beginning of the summer and last minute holidays on the rise Mallorca will hopefully continue to enjoy a strong summer of tourism.
