With a cold front sweeping across Europe, Majorca was braced for bad weather over the weekend. And, as predicted, yesterday saw temperatures hit record lows.

In the early hours of Sunday morning the temperature at Palma airport dropped to -4.8°C whilst the university recorded -5 °C. The Met office said the island has not experienced such lows since 1972, some 40 years ago.

The plummeting temperatures meant snow and icy conditions, even at sea level. Up to 5cm fell on higher ground with around 1.5cm in Palma itself.

A number of roads in the Serra da Tramuntana were closed as a result. There were some minor traffic accidents and around 30 flights were delayed due to the inclement weather.

Meanwhile the rare sight of snow brought joy for many children and adults across the island.
