Blue flags are awarded independently to beaches or marinas for the quality of the water, cleanliness, safety (including lifeguards), information for beach users, environmental education and protection of the coastal environment.

This year Mallorca's beaches and marinas will be waving 51 blue flags, an increase of 8 from last year.

The new blue flag beaches include Cala Sa Nau in Felanitx, Oratori in Poratls Nous, Cala Vinas and Ses Penyes Rotges in Calvia and Cala Ferrera. Playa de Muro got a commendation for improving access for disabled visitors.

There are 60 beaches in the Balearics and 21 marinas currently with blue flags.

Blue flags are given out by an independent organisation called the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Beaches are evaluated each year and monitored for their facilities and cleanliness. Read more about the criteria required here.
