New 2012 prices for Soller train and tram

Price rises prove unpopular with locals

Soller has received a lot of publicity of late, as it celebrates 100 years of the train. Important people came to town for the unveiling of the Miro mural on the platform. Speeches have been made praising the enterprising locals who rose to the challenge and are running a thriving business.

The time has now come to end the parties and celebrations for this year as there is a living to be made. The 2012 tourist season is officially under way, bringing with it price rises on the Soller Train and Tram. Prices have remained the same for the past couple of years but this year has made up for all that. Here are the prices, as of April 2012:

Soller Tram

Soller to Port de Soller - €5.00 (or €3.50 for Balearic residents showing DNI card)

Half price for children aged 3 - 6 years. Children aged 7 and over pay full price.

Ticket sales are on board the tram. This is a one way charge. The same fee is applicable for the return journey. This means the total return charge is €10 for adults/ older children and 5€ for children aged 3 – 6 years.

Soller Train

Palma to Soller : €19.50 (or €14.00 for Balearic residents showing DNI card)

Discounts available for children aged 3 – 6. Children aged 7 and over pay full price.

This is a one way charge with the same fee being applicable for the return journey. Therefore the total return charge is €39 (or €28 for Balearic residents showing the DNI card).

The best deal is the combined train and tram offer; Soller to Palma return (or vice versa), plus the tram to the Port of Soller and return. Price: € 28 (or €20 for Balearic residents showing the DNI card)

The Soller businesses that welcome hundreds of tourists here every year are worried by these price rises. The idea that during family holidays mum, dad and two children are going to have to pay a total of €20 each way to get from Soller town to the Port de Soller beach by tram is a concern. Some feel the taxis of Soller have just been handed their summer bonus and that they will be doing a roaring trade. This may well be just the beginning of this saga as the groundswell of opinion may change things. I will keep you informed.
