A New Image for Playa de Palma Beach Resort in Mallorca

End of street drinking and a new face for Mallorca's Playa de Palma

The Mallorca beach resort of Playa de Palma is planning to change it's image to attract more money to the beach.

Playa de Palma is currently the “German Magaluf”, a 5km stretch of coast line from the edge of the capital to S'Arenal, that attracts thousands of tourist a year. In the past it has been popular destination but the sea side resort has been marred by tourists drinking cheap super market alcohol on the beach front rather than in bars. All that is set to change.

The deputy mayor of Palma de Mallorca, Alvaro Gijon has plans to impose a 24 hour ban on drinking in the street saying “booze tourism is out of date” and mentioning destinations like Miami and St Tropez as inspirations for the future of Playa de Palma.

The plan is to upgrade the hotels on the beach front to four and five star accommodation and build sports facilities and casinos to entice tourists from affluent areas like China and Dubai to Mallorca. “We want people who spend a lot of money” said Snr Alvaro “In the next five to six years we will turn the appearance of Playa de Palma 180 degrees.”

The beach and promenade in Playa de Palma are great and with a few new hotels, quality bars and restaurants this could be a truly great strip. We look forward to seeing what comes next.
