Angry Birds and Instagram are fun but Son Espases Hospital in Palma de Mallorca is putting their physicians mobile phones to better use with an app that allows doctors to see a patients ECG results remotely.

Son Espases will be the first hospital in Spain to get to grips with the new technology. The system allows doctors to look at Electro Cardiogram result on the screen of their smart phones. Previously this could only be done on a computer or station in the hospital but now doctors can see patients results while they are still in the ambulance on the way to hospital or be consulted out of office hours for expert opinions.

It is hoped that the system will speed up hospital responses to heart attacks and strokes and could help lower hospital costs. With quick diagnosis patients can be treated as soon as they arrive thus reducing the amount of time patients have to stay in hospital.
