A potential strike by Mallorca's hospitality unions in July has been averted after the CCOO & UGT unions reached agreement with the industry management over workers rights and wages. Had the strike gone ahead on the 20th July, many holiday makers in Mallorca would have been affected, with disruption in their hotels, the restaurants & bars.

The general secretary of the hotel management union CCOO, Ángeles Sánchez, said that concessions had been agreed with regard to wages in the light of the economic difficulties facing Spain, but that workers rights had been protected. It is hoped that this agreement will stand until 2014 when fresh negotiations will centre around wages.

The agreement comes after weeks of pressure by tour operators on the government to interevene in the negotiations. British & German tour operators have reported that last minute holidays to Majorca have suffered because of the threat of strike action and some cancellations have come through.

Potential strike action by coach drivers for the 21st & 22nd July continues to worry tour operators and tourists alike. The transport union meet with their employers on Thursday in an effort to reach their own agreement.
