Plans to levy new taxes on car rental in Mallorca have been put on hold. Jose Vicente Mari, the minister of finance and budget said yesterday that the initiation of the law that would allow for a change in taxation has been put on hold until after the summer season.

The plan was to change the taxes levied on plastic bottles, major shops and car rental but the decision was reached that these taxes would adversely affect one of the few areas generating an positive income.

The taxes were proposed to help off-set the 37.5€m defecit in the Balearics and a tax on CO2 emissions was expected to generate €15m alone.

The taxes hikes have been postponed but the government insists they will go ahead. So for this summer at least car hire in Mallorca will not be affected.
