No strike in August by air traffic controllers
The union representing Spanish air traffic controllers (USCA) has announced that they will not call a strike in August. The decision comes after the Spanish prime minister Zapatero asked the union to act responsibly, given Spain's current economic situation. A spokesman for the union said that they understood the impact that a strike would have on hoteliers, airlines and others in the tourism industry, and the consequent damage to the economy.
Further talks between the union and airport authority (AENA) to settle the dispute are due to be held tomorrow. There is still a possibility that a strike could occur in September. Both sides are under pressure from the government and the tourism industry to resolve their issues. Despite excellent deals being available in Mallorca this summer, travellers require the assurance that their plans will not be impacted by strike action.
