After eight months of restoration work, the unique Gothic altarpiece in Palma de Mallorca's La Seu Cathedral is to be revealed to the public this week. The official unveiling will take place on Wednesday 2nd November at 8.00pm where Antonio Reig, who was in charge of the project, will talk about the altarpience's history and the restoration.

The structure has been covered with scaffolding since February this year which has allowed thorough cleaning and the repair of the polychrome decoration and the gold surface. The form and history of this Gothic altarpiece means it is the only one of its kind remaining in the world today.

The altarpiece dates from the fifteenth century and has been subject to several alterations which included the image being divided into two pieces. In 1904, the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi was invited to restore the altarpiece. Gaudi worked in the cathedral for 10 years, adding stained glass windows, a lecturn and a beautiful folding staircase that leads to the Holy Sacrement.

The public will be able to view the restored masterpiece free of charge this week - Thursday and Friday from 4.00pm to 7.00pm, and on Saturday from 3.00pm until 6.00pm. For more information, please see the Palma Cathedral website.
