No bidders for the Palacio de Congresos in Palma de Mallorca

The building work on the Congress and Conference Centre in Palma, the Palacio de Congresos, has once again been brought to a halt this week. The building, which is one of the first things visitors to Mallorca's capital see, has been plagued with financial and management problems and was originally scheduled to open at the end of 2011. The continued problems were confirmed this week as a lack of developers were found to continue with the project.

The Palma City council has made it clear that there are no circumstances under which the project will be abandoned but they are now considering awarding separate contracts for the hotel and conference centre. The original plans were for the conference centre (capacity of 2,400 people) to contain convention rooms and an impressive restaurant surrounded by a hanging garden on the top floor, that would have unrestricted sea views. These facilities were to be directly connected to the main hotel by a bridge. Members of the public would also be welcome to use the centres facilities.

The City's mayor said that he was surprised that no Mallorcan hoteliers had come forward to take on the hotel and conference centre but that he understood that in the current financial climate there were few companies who could make such an investment.

Hopefully the project will be picked up soon and work can continue as the potential of the Hotel and Conference centre is enormous and at the moment the construction site is an eye sore on Palma's beautiful waterfront.
