Palma to have electric vehicle recharge points

In an effort to encourage the use of electric vehicles, Palma City Council has opened a battery recharging point in the underground municipal car park in Via Roma. Palma’s Municipal Car Parks will set up recharging points at five other municipal car parks – the others being Antoni Maura, Parc de sa Riera, Marquès de la Sènia, Manacor and Santa Pagesa. As well as the service being totally free, those who take advantage of it will also receive two hours free parking.

Mayor Aina Calvo was first to demonstrate the recharge points. These points can also be used for electrically-powered motorbikes, bicycles and wheelchairs.

The electric vehicle concept is still very new and at present there are only two such cars in Palma. However, earlier this month, the Transport department on the City Council launched a campaign to encourage people to invest in electric cars as opposed to vehicles which run on fossil-based fuel.

Electric cars are much quite, and clearly better for the environment. A full recharge of an electric car costs around 3 euros and lasts 10 hours. The driver can go for 200 kilometres without having to “top up.”
