Laureate International Universities met with the Balearic government in Palma last week to discuss expanding its network of private universities to include an establishment on Majorca.

Representatives of the LIU presented their plans for the new European university to president of the Balearics, Jose Ramon Bauza, and minister for education, Rafael Bosch. Ten graduate and six post graduate courses, in subjects ranging from architecture to medicine, will be offered. The Maioris development in Llucmajor is the planned location for the new centre and the project has a budget of €25 million.

Founded in 1998, Laureate International Universities currently runs over 60 ‘centers of excellence’, catering to more than half a million students worldwide. Subjects are predominantly vocational, ranging from law and medicine to IT and business. In April 2010 Bill Clinton became honorary chancellor for the organisation.

The government is said to be in favour of the project. Assuming they give the go-ahead, the LIU aim to open the new facility in time for the 2014-2015 academic year and hope to have 1,000 students enrolled within five years.
