Rafael Nadal wins US tennis Open to complete career Grand Slam

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

Rafael Nadal became the seventh man in history to win all four Grand Slam tournaments when he beat Novak Djokovic in the US Open mens tennis final last night. In a rain-delayed final, Rafa took the match 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2. This is the first time that he has beaten Djokovic on hard courts.

Nadal has had a superb year, winning both the French Open and Wimbledon ensuring he remains the number 1 tennis player in the world. Born in Manacor, Mallorca, he returns to the island when his tennis schedule allows. A knee injury sustained in Australia earlier this year threatened to keep Nadal out of the game, but expert treatment ensured he returned stronger than ever.

Humble as ever, Nadal admitted that he had never thought to achieve such success in his career. It is this attitude that has made Nadal the most popular tennis player on the circuit. Nadal will now set his sights on the last major tournament of the year - the 1000 series Masters Cup, to be held in London in December.

Congratulations to Rafa - Mallorca should be hugely proud of this sporting superstar. You can find out more about Nadal on his official website Rafael Nadal
