Palma City Council have given the go-ahead for a new shopping and leisure complex in Playa de Palma's Ses Fontanelles district. The complex will be next door to the brilliant Palma Aquarium and will feature a large shopping mall, restaurants, gardens, office space and over 2000 underground and outdoor parking spaces.

The popular beach resort of Playa de Palma has been earmarked by the Mallorcan government for regeneration and improvement in order to make it a world class holiday resort for the 21st century. The addition of a brand new shopping mall forms a part of these plans.

The commercial complex in Ses Fontanelles will cover an area of 75,400 square meters, with the shopping area spanning two floors. The Urban Management team have been granted a business licence for the office and leisure complex and are now awaiting a building permit before construction can begin. It is hoped that this will be issued in the next couple of weeks.

However, the project has not gone without a hitch as environmentalists have protested the plans to build a retail outlet on existing wetlands that are home to many rare plant species. As a compromise, two thirds of the plans will be 'green' and there will be 225,000 square metres devoted to botanical gardens with nature trails for the public to enjoy.

Ses Fontanelles plan to follow the same format as Mallorca's largest shopping complex Festival Park which is just off the motorway from Palma in Marratxi and offers outlet shopping, restaurants, cinema and bowling.
