Hundreds of visitors came to Palma Cathedral over the past few days to see the careful restoration of the choir stalls and the gallery, and to admire the hard work of skilled restorers.

The choir stalls were first built in the 14th century and have been a resilient structure in the cathedral. They are steeped in architectural history and were restored by Catalan artist and architect Antoni Gaudi in 1899-1901.

Some of the restorers were there over the weekend to explain the work carried out on the choir stalls and gallery. Their intention was to explain to visitors how the restoration of old, delicate and valuable pieces of Catalan and Mallorcan architecture was carried out.

The recent restorations of the choir stalls (which were originally painted by Catalan artist Josep Maria Jujol who was an assistant to Antoni Gaudi), are said to be unorthodox when compared to the Santissim Chapel which was restored by Miquel Barcelo, a Mallorcan artist. There have also been 12 angels coated in gold in a baroque style that have undergone restoration and form part of an altar.

The restoration project which began in April and includes the lower chapel "La Seu Trinitat Baixa" and parts of the cathedral's roof, will be completed next month.
