Residents to protest against regeneration plans for Playa de Palma

Since the plans for the redevelopment of stretches of Playa de Palma were unveiled to the public in August, concerns have been growing about the impact the plan will have on the residents of the area. Approximately 250 homes and more than 100 businesses are threatened with compulsory purchase and demolition.

The focus of the plan lies in the area from Can Pastilla through S’Arenal to Cala Blava. The plan suggests that between 40 and 60% of current hotel beds will be eradicated, and replaced with more upscale hotels that will attract a more discerning tourist.

However, it is reported that the majority of the home owners and business owners in this area are unwilling to see their homes and businesses destroyed, despite relocation packages being available. A demonstration will be held on Saturday 14th September at the Consolat de Mar Balearic government headquarters in Palma at 8pm.

The Balearic President, Francesc Antich, has responded to the residents, saying that he would like to see the minimum amount of compulsory purchases. He has organised a meeting with the Playa de Palma consortium and the Llucmajor resident and business associations in order to discuss the plan and potential modifications.

Plans for the project are not due to be completed until 2015, and it is hoped that this consultation period will result in a solution acceptable to all parties.
