Palma City Council have agreed to residents requests to change the 'Rambla dels Ducs de Palma de Mallorca' street name to the traditional and simpler name of 'La Rambla' in order to sever any connection with the disgraced Duke of Palma, Iñaki Urdangarin.

Previously a professional handball player, Iñaki Urdangarin married the King of Spain's youngest daughter in 1997 whereupon he gained the title of the Duke of Palma de Mallorca. He is accused of embezzling public funds through a non-profit organisation, the Nóos Institute, from both the Balearic and Valencian regions of Spain.

The Duke has appeared in the High Court of Justice in the Balearics several times since 2012 after being summoned by the Anti-corruption Prosecutor. Iñaki Urdangarin has been ordered by the court in Palma to pay civil bail of €8.2m for corruption and over-budgeting of works by the Nóos Institute that were never carried out between 2003-2007.

The Spanish Royal family tend to spend their summer holidays in Mallorca, staying in the Marivent Palace in Cala Major, just outside Palma. The Duke has not been involved in any Royal Family events since the scandal and his section on the Spanish Royal family's website has been removed.

The change of street name in Palma will take place by the 6th February when replacement street signs will be put up.
