Serra de Tramuntana declared a World Heritage Site

The Cultural Landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana was yesterday declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was one of just six sites to achieve the prestigious listing after UNESCO met to discuss nominations at their headquarters in Paris.

The application was submitted by Mallorca's outgoing socialist party in 2010. During the campaign over 40,000 people, including members of the Spanish royal family and many of the rich and famous with homes on the island, signed their petition.

Located on a sheer-sided mountain range on the north-west of the island, the Serra de Tramuntana has been transformed by thousands of years of agriculture in an environment with scarce resources. The stunning landscape is marked by agricultural terraces, water mills, dry stone constructions and farms.

Mallorca, already known for its beautiful beaches and culture, should benefit hugely from the listing and associated publicity. Newly appointed president of the Council of Mallorca, Maria Salom, was delighted by the news and believes it will help to attract tourists to the island in the quieter, non-peak seasons.
