Shell From Spanish Civil War on Beach in Mallorca

Navy & Civil Guard Secure Mallorca Beach With Controlled Explosion

Finding shells on the beaches in Mallorca is not unusual, but a Russian tourist found an unexploded Howitzer shell from the Spanish Civil War in the water at Sa Coma last weekend.

The unexploded shell was lying in the water about 150 meters from the shore at a depth of 3.5 metres. The Civil Guard were notified and the Navy was eventually called in. The beach was secured and a safety perimeter established before the shell was destroyed using a controlled explosion.

The disposal of the bomb landed on the 77th anniversary of the Republican landings in Mallorca. On August 16th 1936 an expeditionary force led by Officer Alberto Bayo landed on the beach at Sa Coma and set up headquarters in a nearby farm house. Although the loyalist forces were quickly repelled and Boya and his men retreated back to the Spanish main land just under 3 weeks later they left behind weapons and munitions, like the one found at the weekend.

The beach at Sa Coma is now safe and open again to tourists. You can find out about the best beaches in Mallorca on our Guide to Beaches in Mallorca page here on seemallorca.com
