Michelin stars have been awarded to two new Majorcan restaurants in the 2012 edition of the Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal.

Restaurante Jardin in Port Alcudia and Es Fum in St Regis, Mardavall, near Puerto Portals now have Michelin star status. They join a number of restaurants on the island who have retained their star rating: Tristan Restaurant, Puerto Portals; Es Moli d'en Bou, Son Servera; Es Racó d'Es Teix, Deià and Zaranda in the Hilton Sa Torre hotel near Llucmajor.

Restaurante Jardin in the Port of Alcudia is a family owned restaurant, headed up by chef, Macarena de Castro, and her brother Daniel. The food is strictly Mediterranean, with a focus on locally sourced produce. The tasting menu is priced at €70 and includes three starters, five main courses and three deserts.

Located in the luxurious resort of St Regis, near to Puerto Portals, Es Fum also specialises in Mediterranean cusine, prepared by chef, Thomas Kahl. Tasting menus are available and start at €128 for six courses.

The Michelin Guide reviews and rates top restaurants and their chefs, awarding between one and three stars to deserving establishments based on level of service and quality of food. Gaining a star is considered the pinnacle of professional achievement for many chefs and the restaurant can become a destination in its own right. One star is defined as 'very good cuisine in its category', two-stars are 'excellent cuisine, worth a detour' and three stars mean that the restaurant is considered to have 'exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey'.
