Ultra Mallorca race this weekend

Run from Andratx to Pollenca

The Ultra Mallorca Serra de Tramuntana race takes place this Saturday.

An 'ultra' race is any running event that is longer than a standard marathon and this weekend runners in Majorca will set off from Andratx in the south west of the island and run up to Pollenca in the north, covering a distance of over 100km.

To be honest this sounds like a lot of hard work and even though there is a shorter race it's still over 60km (from Valldemossa to Pollenca). Luckily for those of us here at seemallorca.com who are more into reviewing beaches and restaurants than running further than I'm happy to drive, our friend Antony Cassidy at RunMallorca will be taking part and has promised to let us know how the event goes.

The main race starts at midnight tonight and the 'little' race begins at 8am on Saturday morning with the runners expected in Pollenca between10.30pm and midnight. You can follow the race online here.

I have witnessed these Ultra races before in Chamonix and, whilst I've never entered myself due to a penchant for pizza and beer, I have always enjoyed watching them. So, if you find yourself in Pollenca this weekend, it is well worth stopping by the finish line and seeing the runners come in. It's actually quite emotional. Oh and there's usually free chocolate.
