Ummo (Sant Magi, Santa Catalina) has been crowned champion for the third consecutive year in the 2010 TaPalma tapas festival for its mini sandwich of sardine, tomato jam, piparrak & ramallet. Created by chef Igor Rodriguez, the tapa will now go forward to compete at the National Championships of Pinchos & Tapas Valladolid 2011.

Second prize went to BLD (Es Baluard Museum) for its tapa of roast suckling pig with white bean puree and pesto, and third prize was awarded to Tasca de Blanquerna (c/Blanquerna, nr Placa Espanya) for its tomato cured Llampuga with yellow gazpacho terrine and Majorcan olive oil. The restaurant Es Teu Lloc (Pescateria vella, 3, nr Placa Cort) won the best service prize.

The TaPalma event is a celebration of Spain’s most popular gastronomic contribution to the world – the tapa. Now in it’s sixth year of running, the festival has been growing in size and stature so that in 2010 there were 54 bars and restaurants participating. Each establishment creates two original tapas dishes, and each tapa costs €2 or less.

This year, nearly 50,000 people attended the event that ran over five days from 7-11th October. The organisers propose that next years TaPalma will continue to promote quality over quantity.
