Already Six Deaths on Mallorca From 'Balconing'

The British Embassy has reported the deaths of 6 British tourists

The British Embassy in Madrid has reported that already this summer there have been six fatal incidents where British tourists have died following falls from hotel balconies.

Not all of these can be attributed to the so-called 'balconing' which involves individuals climbing between balconies or jumping from balconies into swimming pools, but there is no doubt that many deaths of this nature are drink or drug fuelled. Although the act of balconing is illegal it is physically impossible for police to control what happens in each hotel across the island.

The Mallorcan authorities have cracked down on anti-social behaviour this summer in an attempt to curb all night drinking and accidents of this kind which may be caused by excessive drinking or drugs. However, it has recently come to light that there are in fact some people and businesses who have found ways around the laws.

The traditional 'Pub Crawl' that attracts tourists into bars in Magaluf has been one of the areas targeted by the new regulations. The number of participants is now a maximum of 20, companies can only host one pub crawl per day, a guide and a security guard must be present and the event must take place between 8pm and midnight, no later. However, the use of mobile phone Apps to promote drinks offers at certain bars is now becoming more wide spread, even advertising at what time to attend. Thus avoiding the new regulations.

It has been reported that Police presence will be increased in the area.
