Yet more great news for the Balearic tourist industry. The islands receive around 290 million euros every year from cruise tourism with routes around the Mediterranean often stopping at the Balearics.

Only this October, Palma welcomed more than 90 ships carrying 240,000 passengers, an exceptional amount considering that it represents almost half of the city's population. Cruise tourists spent an average of 103 euros every day in Ibiza, and around 115 in Mallorca, often the starting or ending point of their journey.

Ibiza will also be able to receive larger cruise ships in 2016 thanks to the redevelopment of its port, just in time for the next summer season.

If cruise ships are not your cup of tea, why not plan a shorter sea excursion around the beautiful coastline of Mallorca? Take a look at our boat trips guide for some insider's tips.
