Michelle Obama has returned to the beautiful island of Mallorca for a week-long private holiday after her official visit as First Lady of the United States in 2010. She landed at Palma Son Sant Joan airport early this morning and will definitely be seen this week exploring the island.

Obama has travelled to Mallorca alone after she spent her family break in Martha's Vineyard, a famous holiday destination in Massachusetts. As her daughters start their academic year, she has decided to jet off to our island for a week-long trip.

She will be staying with James Costos, the former US ambassador to Spain, and his husband Michael Smith. The couple are good friends of the Obamas, who they met when Smith was redesigning the White House to suit their taste. Here they have rented Ses Planes, a gorgeous finca near Esporles, in the west of the island. The property of Marieta Salas, a good friend of former Spanish king Juan Carlos, this extensive estate is dedicated to the rearing of purebred Arabian horses and will make the perfect starting point to explore Mallorca, especially the beautiful Serra de Tramuntana and western coastline.

Michelle Obama was invited to the island in 2010 by kings Juan Carlos and Sofía, then still reigning. She met them at Marivent Palace for lunch but her visit lasted only a few hours. It seems like she was impressed by the island and has come back to discover more!
