New lease of life for Bellver Castle

Medieval fortress to be restored next year

The 14th-century castle of Bellver has overlooked Palma Bay for more than 700 years, and time is now catching up with it. Local and regional governments have consequently drawn up a project to rehabilitate its exterior, with works due to take place in 2017.

Bellver Castle's main issues are located in the moat, part of which collapsed in 2010 and has been strutted since then. The 14th-century stones have disintegrated throughout the centuries, mainly because of the constant movement of the water. The parapet walk will also have to be reconstructed, as well as the wall and cistern, but the building will still be open for visits during works.

The project will open for bidding in October, and the government expects that it will cost between €90,000 and €150,000. Bellver Castle is Palma's second most visited monument and very popular with film crews due to its well-preserved medieval style.
