No Ultra Mallorca Serra de Tramuntana Next Year
Organisers of the ultra trail have had to cancel the 2016 event
One of the most important dates in the Mallorcan sports calendar, the competition was a 105km race from Andratx through the mountains to Pollença. However, due to administrative difficulties and the pressure of private landowners and ecologist groups, the 8th edition will not take place.
The main problem encountered by the ultra trail's organisers was finding a route that both complied with the government's restrictions regarding the protection of the Tramuntana's environment, as requested by various ecological associations, and that avoided going through private land.
After suggesting a limitation of just 300 entries, a significant reduction of the 1900 planned by the organisation, last Thursday the authorities forced the competition's coordinators to stop the registration process, stating that they had not received a study of the race's environmental impact. This prompted the decision to cancel the event.
