Normality Restored in Mallorca After a Rainy Weekend

Heavy rain and hailstorms disrupted the island's daily routine

It has been a rocky summer in Mallorca when it comes to weather. The heavens opened once more on Friday, creating traffic disruption and chaos at the airport that lasted until Sunday.

Spain's authorities had forecasted difficulties, issuing yellow and orange warning levels for the island. As predicted, Friday saw heavy rain and hailstorms over Palma causing trees to fall, communications to fail and traffic to be interrupted in main streets.

The check-in area and runway at Mallorca airport were also flooded, resulting in 350 delayed flights on Saturday. The situation improved on Sunday, but handling workers unions have organised a partial strike at Palma airport for today, from 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 20:00. The action, which affects mainly Easyjet and Vueling flights, will continue every Monday and Wednesday in September until they reach an agreement.

It has not been the first time that rains cause damages on the island this summer, following a very wet August.
