Plans to Secure the Road Between Andratx & Estellencs

2.5 million euros budgeted for the repairs & preventative measures

With recent weather causing further erosion in various parts of Mallorca, measures are needed to ensure that roads are safe to travel.

Mallorca Island Council will shortly begin work to secure the coastal road between Andratx and Estellencs in the west of the Island. They plan to install protective netting on both sides of the road in order to hold current rock formations in place and to catch any slides or falling rocks that may come down. Stones and rock slides have on occasion shut the road and are of course a danger to travelling motorists.

Current measures are proving inadequate and so the planned work, which expected to begin in January, will now have steel beams firmly anchored in the forest floor, with wire netting attached along the length of the problem sections of road.

Forest fires in 2013 that destroyed large areas of forest means that the risk of soil erosion is much greater and thus the increased danger of falling rocks. Work is expected to take around 9 months to complete.
