Mallorca rocks to the sounds of Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran opens the summer festival with an amazing set at Mallorca Rocks

featured in Events reviews Author James Fisher, Mallorca Video Reporter Updated

Ed Sheeran opened Mallorca Rocks last night in Magaluf with a gig that left everyone smiling and started the summer-long festival in style. With nothing more than a mic, a guitar and a looping pedal he owned the Mallorca Rocks venue taking to the stage on his own and playing his entire set without support.

The crowd were singing along from the start and Ed played hits from his album "+" like "Lego house", "Drunk"and "The A Team" filling the pool side venue with simple tunes and catchy melodies. When he closed with "You need me, I don't need you", though the place went mental and Ed, strumming away like a mariachi possessed, broke a string and then gave up on his guitar all together and relied on the audience for backing vocals as he stretched the track out for ten minutes getting the whole crowd involved.

It was a great gig and set the tone for the summer ahead with everyone smiling as they filed out of the hotel at the end.

The Mallorca Rocks Hotel is a great venue and apparently at capacity can hold two thousand more than last night's three thousand strong audience. Even when full though the concerts this summer will be pretty intimate and give you a chance to get up close to some of the best UK acts. The hotel is booking up fast and most of the rooms for June and July have been sold but luckily tickets for the gigs can be bought separately so if you want to see the Kaiser Chiefs, Plan B, Chase and Status, Paolo Nutini or Tinie Tempah you still can.

For me the summer started last night. A wee ginger kid, who looks like one of Harry Potter's mates played his heart out for the opening night of what promises to be a great few months of music. If the gigs that follow leave you feeling as happy as Ed did last night then it's going to be an all new summer of love.
