Palma hosts 34th annual book fair

Promoting Spanish and Catalan literature in the heart of Palma

From 27th May to 5th June 2016 the leafy avenue of Passeig del Born will host Palma's annual book fair.

This year it consists of 25 stands, representing various book shops in Mallorca as well publishers Planeta and the Institute of Balearic studies. There is a busy programme of events throughout the day which include authors talks, poetry recitals and book signings.

Don't expect to find many books in English. I spoke to various booksellers who explained one of the main aims of the fair is to promote Spanish and Catalan literature. Understandably so. My experience of Spanish bookshops to date has been lots of shelves dedicated to translated copies of American bestsellers, so it was great to see so much variety by native writers.

For those looking for Mallorcan titles there's a lot on offer, including intriguing new release Quan Jo Sigui Gran Jo Vull Ser Mallorqui - "When I grow up, I want to be Mallorcan." The fair is clearly a great opportunity for Mallorcan authors to promote their work. This evening, at 19.00, Mallorcan author LLuvia Beltrán will be launching her new book Neuro-Genesis. For children's books in Catalan head to, Quart Creixent's stand. Founded in 1982 they are proud to be the first book shop to have had a children's section in Palma, and now dedicate their charming shop to Catalan literature, as well as music and videos.

For those who struggle with Spanish, the good news is Manuela of Los Oficios Terrestres, a bookshop-come-hairdresser based in Palma, told me of their English language book club which convenes every month. Email info@losoficiosterrestres.com for details.

The Palma Book Fair stands are open from 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 21.00 until Sunday 5th June. Book lovers be warned, credit cards are accepted!
