Soy Restaurant Review

The outside has a beach shack feel owing to the open hatches where diners can see all the way to the open kitchen at the back. Walking inside, the decoration escalates as you are welcomed by a mishmash of lights and foliage hanging from the ceiling. I would say the attention to detail and immaculately presented tables evoke an upmarket yet relaxed vibe.

After a quick snoop around, we sat at a table in the shade outside and were handed a couple of menus by our waitress. We decided to kick off our Asian feast by sampling some of their ‘Asian Crisps’ (or prawn crackers – as us Brits like to call them) washed down with some thirst-quenching cocktails. Having taken a couple of minutes to dissect the drinks menu, we opted for a ‘Sake Sangria’ and ‘Gin Geisha’. The former was a Japanese twist on traditional sangria owing to the taste of the ‘sake’ wine coming through, whilst the Gin Geisha was packed full of punch and a twist of spice. Both were equally refreshing and a welcome change to the standard cocktails you tend to see on menus on the island.

The menu here is full of mouth-watering dishes. I spied plenty of Asian favourites on there so it was easy to get carried away when we were ordering. For instance, the ‘Edamame’ and ‘Fried spring roll’ couldn’t be ignored and they were at the beginning of the menu. In the end, our starters created a bit of a spectacle for pedestrians passing by, as a range of sushi and warm Asian dishes assembled on the large table in front of us. The ‘Red dragon roll’ was a contender to take the crown, comprised of fried shrimp, avocado, teriyaki sauce and a delicious strawberry topping. My eyes were mesmerised by the colourful presentation while my taste buds enjoyed the unique combination of flavours in my mouth. 

Being a fan of a bit of spice, I was particularly taken by Soy’s ‘Spicy tuna roll’ in which tuna, rocket, Japanese mayo and shichimi united to create a flavoursome yet fiery bite. The ‘Katsu roll’ brought all the elements of a Katsu curry, i.e crunchy chicken, cream cheese, avocado and mango into a piece of sushi. While I am a fish fan, I thought it was a great combination and the perfect alternative for those keen to steer clear of anything fishy.

The nigari dish appeared on a long wooden board and the raw fish was artfully garlanded with jungle leaves, tropical flowers and delivered on thumb-length pillows of rice which had been cooked to perfection. The ‘Sashimi’ was flamboyantly presented on a green salad over a bowl of ice to ensure it stayed chilled and fresh in the warm Mediterranean air.

The choice for main course was simpler, purely due to the fact there was less to choose from. The ‘Soy style spicy beef’ was tempting but I am pleased that I went with the ‘Pad Thai Kai’ in the end, as it stole the show when it came to our main courses. As it arrived at the table, we spotted others looking over in awe, the dish was a work of art. It featured every colour you could possibly imagine! I have eaten numerous Pad Thai dishes in different countries, but none had looked like this. Of course, appearance isn’t everything and I am happy to confirm the flavour of this dish was satisfyingly tangy - just as a Pad Thai should be.

It doesn’t end there, my friend had opted for the ‘Indonesian Satay’ and was willing to let me try it. Presented on a wooden board, the chicken played the leading role and was everything the character description required. Arriving on skewers, the meat was tender and smothered in the tastiest peanut sauce. The rice accompaniment mixed with some vegetables provided the perfect reprieve from the rich flavours of the peanut sauce. 

 Soy Restaurant offers a range of sugary treats to satisfy a sweet tooth for dessert. For an authentic Asian pudding, then the ‘Coconut sticky rice – Soy style’ should be your top choice. Although I imagine the ‘Soy cheesecake’ and ‘Darkforest Chocolate’ are top of the charts. For a lighter option, there’s also the choice of ice cream, including flavours such as green tea, vanilla, mango and chocolate. Instead of dessert, we decided to try one of their homemade lemonades. A refreshing end to our Asian banquet!
