Intermediate, picturesque ride to Campanet in the north of Mallorca
An easy route more suited to someone with a bit of road cycling experience due to the nature of the hills and busy roads.
Beginning in the Northern town of Puerto Pollenca, this ride will take you on a picturesque ride through the valley from Pollenca to the village of Campanet on the Cami Vell de Campanet route.
This route is easy to follow with sign posts the whole way. Beginning in Puerto Pollenca, take the cycle path on the Ma-2200 all the way to Pollenca town. This 5km road to the first roundabout at Pollenca can often be busy with traffic but the cycle path is very wide and traffic does not get too close.
At this first roundabout, go left to continue on the Ma-2200 road where you will continue on the wide cycle path. Bypass the town of Pollenca and keep going. Once past the last entrance/exit to Pollenca the traffic on the road changes to a much faster and busier road, and the road surface for cyclists deteriorates somewhat. There is no longer a wide cycle path here and cars will pass very fast beside you. Be sure to give yourself plenty of room from the side of the road as there are no safety barriers and the road dips down quite a few feet beside you. You will be on this road for around 4km with a few uphill slopes and bends but nothing that a confident road cyclist cannot manage. Unfortunately this is the main road from the Palma motorway to the towns of Pollenca, Puerto Pollenca and Cala Sant Vicenc and so traffic can be very heavy and the road was not built to cater for cyclists. However, the turn you will make to the Cami Vell de Campanet is clearly marked by a large open area with yellow sign posts, bins and a wooden signpost with Cami Vell de Campanet, Campanet and Pollenca all marked.
The 10km ride to the outskirts of Campanet on the Cami Vell de Campanet is very enjoyable. The road surface here is smooth and there are very few cars on this single track road. There are only a few small slopes to climb on this route and so it’s a peaceful ride to Campanet.
Once you approach the outskirts of Campanet there are signposts that are very easily followed, in order to get to the centre of the town, following signs to ‘Centre Villa’. Some roads in the town can be a bit tricky here as there are stop signs on hills that can break any momentum you have. Stop for a coffee or a drink here, or continue on to one of the oldest churches in Mallorca, the Ermita St Miquel. Just a bit further on from here are the Caves of Campanet.
This route is popular to join towns such as Moscari and Selva which in turn leads to the climb to Lluc Sanctuary. To get directly from Campanet to Selva you can follow signs from Campanet on the Cami de l’Aboralet turning to the Cami de Can Tabou and Cami de Campanet. Alternatively take the Ma-2131 to Selva via Moscari.
Itinerary: Puerto Pollensa - Pollensa - Campanet
Distance: 46 km (return trip) Max elevation: 115m
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate ride for road cyclists (road Ma-2200 out of Pollenca can have very heavy and fast moving traffic)
