Bid to expand Llevant Nature Reserve, Mallorca

Arta Council hopes to expand the boundaries of the Llevant Nature Reserves after changes in categorisation of neighbouring estate, Es Canons. At a council meeting held earlier this week all parties, bar the Partido Popular, voted in favour of the proposals and the council now plans to ask the central government to purchase the coastal land.

The country estate of Es Canons had previously been approved for property development. In 2000 the Balearic government overruled this decision and the land was re-categorised as a protected area. And, in October last year, the Spanish high court ordered the regional government to pay compensation to owners of the estate.

Declared a natural park in 2002, the Llevant peninsula is stunningly beautiful with its mix of rugged, hilly terrain and remote, unspoilt beaches. A paradise for bird lovers', it is home to numerous species of birds of prey as well as colonies of rare tortoises. For more information read 'Llevant Nature Reserve'
