Stormy weather in Palma takes its toll on Cala Mayor beach

Storm destroys part of the sea front

On Wednesday, a freak storm crashed through Palma and the surrounding areas. The beach at Cala Mayor was left scarred.

Around 2pm almost 50 litres of water fell per square metre in the city centre. Around 300 bolts of lightning hit the roofs of the high rises. The local authorities forced to close the submerged Paseo Maritimo, causing a back log of traffic. Most roads were turned to rivers but it wasn’t long until the water had drained away.

The beach at Cala Mayor was victim to the enormous volume of drain water. A hefty chunk of the beach was washed into the sea, filling the bay waters with sand and leaving the beach scarred for the near future.

The fine sands at the beach are artificial, added to the bay for further attraction. With police tape securing the now washed out space, the beach is slightly less alluring.

The forecast for the weekend is looking more typical for Palma, with blue skies and temperatures of around 30 degrees.
