The defending Olympic tennis champion, Mallorca's Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the Spanish team for the 2012 Olympics in London. The Majorca tennis star announced yesterday that he was not fit enough to play. In a statement the eleven time grand slam winner said; "I am not in condition to compete in the London Olympics and therefore will not travel as planned with the Spanish delegation to take part in the Games."

Nadal was supposed to be carrying the Spanish flag in the opening ceremony of the games and his disappointment at not being able to represent his country was clear from his post on twitter; "I'm sorry, I can't to compete in the Olympics. This is one of the saddest moments of my career."

What comes next for the Majorca tennis star is not clear but it seems that his knee is causing the problem. Despite the pain in his left leg he took the French Open this year but was swiftly knocked out of Wimbledon by the 100th placed Lukas Rosol and it looks like it is the same injury that is keeping him out of the Olympics.

We wish him a speedy recovery.
