More 'demons' than ever in Mallorca's fiestas

The tradition of dressing up as demons and devils at Mallorca's fiestas and saint's days is gaining in popularity, say the Federation of Demons, Devils & Fire Beasts. There are over 30 clubs, which collectively have more than 1000 members - double the number from five years ago.

The history of the demon is rooted in Mediterranean society as well as religion. The arrival of Christianity meant that the earth spirits of Medieval times were transformed into devils that represented the bestial and twisted part of nature. Hence the popularity of animal masks, horns, wings, tails and the use of red (representing blood & fire) for the costumes. The demons appear on the eve of carnivals and religious fiestas, when social conventions are pushed aside and it is considered acceptable for the demons to behave in an ‘anything goes' fashion. Of course, the demons are treated with much affection, as they inspire fun rather than fear. The highlight of any demonic fiesta is the ‘correfoc' where demons run through the streets with fire crackers and fireworks - quite a spectacle!

As the demons often handle fireworks, EU regulations require that these ‘fire runners' are trained in the interest of public safety. The Federation now runs courses that meet these requirements and identification cards are issued on completion. A further regulation demanding that the fire runners keep 15 metres away from public crowds was waived as it was argued that the ‘correfoc' is part of Balearic & Majorcan cultural tradition and as such, is protected from modern health & safety rules.

Some of the more popular festivals on Mallorca where demons make an appearance include St Antoni (January), Sant Sebastian (January), Nit de Foc (June) and St Bartholomew (August), although you are likely to find them participating in many of Majorca's fiestas. Dates change according to each calendar year, but you can find out approximately when they will be in our Events, Festivals & Fiestas in Mallorca & Palma de Majorca pages.
