Palma de Mallorca airport to be hit by two day strike

Three of Spain's biggest unions, CCOO, UGT and USO, have called for a two day strike by ground staff and baggage handlers across all Spanish airports. Up to 60,000 workders are expected to be involved in the industrial action which is due to take place over two 24 hour periods on 18th and 26th August.

Unions issued a joint statement saying action was necessary as handling companies were repeatedly breaking industrial agreements with workers. The unions are due to meet this week to discuss providing ‘a minimum service' to travellers during the walk out.

The strike could not come at a worse time. August is the busiest month of the year for air travel. Airport arrivals at the Son Sant Joan airport, Palma de Mallorca, are set to break records this week. And the hotel association has reported that occupancy levels are close to 100 percent.
