Palma City council and a private company Mallorcawifi are planning to turn the 7km stretch of Playa de Palma beach into a WiFi zone.

€300 000 has been invested by Mallorcawifi in the project which aims to mean that holiday makers can surf on tablets and phones on the beach without having to use expensive roaming data internet connections. The project will occur in three phases; firstly the section of beach between Cala Estancia and Arnal de Llucmajor will be introduced then the area behind the beach an finally the third area will bedetermined by the popularity of the first two.

The plan is to encourage "smart tourism" and hopefully set a standard for beaches throughout Europe.
