Smashing pumpkins headline at Muro's autumn fair!

Giant pumpkins were the stars of the show at Muro's 'Tardor' Fair (also known as Fira de sa Carabassa) this weekend. The annual fair places the pumpkin at its centre of celebrations, with supporting entertainments such as fairground rides and a local produce market, with traditionally dressed stall-keepers.

Pumpkins from all over Mallorca were on display, with the very largest being entered into 'who's-the-daddy' heaviest pumpkin competition. The winner came in at 82kg, which is pretty impressive - until you compared it against the super-giant pumpkins that had been shipped over especially from Barcelona. These monsters were weighing in at over 200kg, with the largest measuring an astonishing 265.5kg.

This Majorcan fair was blessed with fine sunny weather, meaning the crowds were out in full. The fair started on Friday evening with 16 local bars & restaurants taking part in a 'pumpkin tapas trail' (Ruta Gastronomica sa carabassa), where visitors could try tapas featuring pumpkin for the grand price of €1. The organisers very kindly laid on transport between the bars in the form of a little tourist train, very handy for those who may not be familiar with the streets of Muro.

Saturday evening saw wine tasting in the local church, to the sound of live jazz music playing in the background, followed by the biggest pumpkin competition held on the Sunday. The fair closed with music and dancing in the main square on the Sunday evening.
