Saturday evening saw the long awaited Reis Mags parade in Palma de Mallorca. The traditional parade of the Three Kings started at 5.30pm at Moll Vell (La Llonja) where the kings began their journey through the city centre and eventually finished at Plaza Cort.

Police estimated a turnout of between 150,000 to 200,000 Mallorcans, who lined the streets to watch 37 floats filled with performers. Musicians, dancers, clowns and plenty of fancy dress figures entertained the crowd as the floats passed by. Over six tonnes of sweets were thrown into the crowds during the parade, much to the delight of the watching children.

The Three Kings arrived by traditional Turkish boat in the harbour and were the highlight of the parade. King Melchor was riding on a white unicorn and King Gaspar appeared on the back of a tiger. King Belshazzar was featured with a large lion.

The budget for this years parade was €236,000, an increase of 8% over last year. The three kings celebrations play a more important role in Mallorcan society than Santa Claus - many of the children only receive their presents on the 5th of January.
