This years Mallorcan wine crop is expected to be "Excellent" according to the President of the Denominacio d'Origin council, Toni Bennassar. He met yesterday with wine makers and celebrities from Mallorca to celebrate the new crop that will make this year's wine. Favourable conditions throughout the year have raised hopes for this years grapes. A cold winter meant that some of the diseases that can threaten the grapes never took hold and this year the wine makers in Mallorca are hoping to yield 1.8 million kilos from the vineyards.

The Denominacio d'Origin is a quality control standard that was adopted by the Council for Agriculture and Fisheries as a way of marking wines that have been grown, produced and bottled in Mallorca. There are thirteen wines in Mallorca that bare this stamp of approval as well as countless other wines that are either blended from grapes from elsewhere or simply made at home for personal consumption.

Wine has played an important part in the history of Mallorca and there are fiestas and parties later in the year to celebrate wine and wine making. One of the messiest of these is the Festa des Vernar which is a nine day festival held in Binissalem in the middle of September that involves a grape fight.
