The Solar Eclipse

A rare sunset spectacle as the moon fully blocks the sun on 12 August

Location
Port de Soller

On the evening of Wednesday 12 August 2026, Mallorca will witness a total solar eclipse, the first visible from Spain since 1905.

The partial phase begins around 19:35, with totality arriving at approximately 20:31 and lasting roughly 1 minute 36 seconds, just before sunset. The total phase will occur just a few degrees above the western horizon, so the best views will be from west-facing coastal spots and elevated viewpoints with a clear, unobstructed view towards the sea.

The Serra de Tramuntana offers excellent viewing opportunities, along with stretches of the south-west coast around Andratx and Calvià. Palma itself will see the eclipse, though not quite at its peak. Certified eclipse glasses are essential for the partial phases, direct viewing without protection can cause serious eye damage. Hotels and boat charters across the island are already filling up for what promises to be one of the most memorable astronomical events of the decade.

Where and when

Island-wide, best viewed from west-facing coastal areas and the Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca
