Spain's 15th Bacchus International Wine Competition took place last weekend in Madrid. Two Mallorcan wines, Tinto Dos (2013) by Finca Can Axartell and Son Bordiu Cabernet Sauvignon (2007) by Agrocoll Pastor, received the sought-after Golden Bacchus distinction.

Bacchus is the only international wine competition celebrated in Spain that is recognised by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). For four days, over 1500 different wines are tasted by a jury formed of more than 100 master sommeliers, specialist journalists and winemakers from all around the world. They grant three distinctions: Grand Gold Bacchus, Gold Bacchus and Silver Bacchus.

This year, two wines from Mallorca were awarded the Gold Bacchus. Tinto Dos is a red wine that combines Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and local variety Callet. It is made by Can Axartell, a winery located in a valley south of Pollença, built inside an old stone quarry. They grow their vines with organic methods, hand-picking the grapes which are processed with the "Mètode Gravetat" using only the natural force of gravity to press them.

Son Bordils Cabernet Sauvignon is made with the homonymous variety and a small percentage of Callet at Finca Son Bordils in Inca. One of the oldest vineyards on the island, this estate was dedicated to the production of wine in the 15th century. Their award-winning red wine is matured in oak barrels for 16 months and is perfectly paired with local sobrassada or Mahó cheese.

Local Mallorca wines or "Vi de la Terra de Mallorca" are fastly becoming popular all around the world for their particular taste, partly due to the use of endemic grape varieties. Why not visit one of the island's wineries when in Mallorca? You will even get the chance to try some of their delicious wines.
